@Clarence112, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The E1 error code on your HP Smart Tank 580 All-in-One Printer typically indicates a paper size mismatch, even if you're using A4 paper. This issue can persist due to a few overlooked settings or hardware misalignments. Here's a step-by-step guide to help resolve it:

Check Paper Settings in Windows

Make sure the paper size settings in both the printer driver and the application you're printing from match the actual paper loaded.

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  • Right-click your printer > Printing Preferences
  • Under the Paper/Quality or Advanced tab:
    • Set Paper Size to A4
    • Set Paper Source to the correct tray
  • Also check the paper size in the Print dialog of the app you're using (e.g., Word, PDF viewer)

Adjust Settings via Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If your printer is connected to a network:

  1. Find your printer’s IP address (usually shown on the control panel or via the HP Smart App).
  2. Enter the IP in a browser to open the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  3. Navigate to:
    • Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management
    • Set the correct Paper Size and Paper Type
    • Click Apply

Reload and Align Paper

  • Remove all paper from the tray.
  • Fan the stack to prevent sticking.
  • Reload A4 paper, ensuring it’s aligned properly and the guides are snug but not tight.
  • Avoid using curled, damp, or previously printed paper.

Reset the Printer

A simple reset can clear persistent errors:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug it from the power source for 60 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on.

Update Firmware

Even if you've updated recently, double-check:

  • Open the HP Smart App
  • Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Printer Updates
  • Install any available firmware updates

Try a Copy Test

Try making a photocopy directly from the printer. If it still shows the E1 error, the issue may be hardware-related (like a faulty sensor or tray alignment).
