Hi @BarbW1,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with the cartridge recognition or installation process. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the problem:

  • Check Compatibility: Ensure that the HP 65XL cartridge you purchased is compatible with your HP DeskJet 2640 printer model.
  • Proper Installation: Make sure that the cartridge is correctly installed into the printer. Open the printer cover, remove the old cartridge (if still present), and insert the new one firmly into the correct slot until you hear a click.
  • Clean Contacts: Sometimes, the metal contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer might get dirty or covered with ink residue, preventing proper communication. Carefully clean the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  • Restart Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, and then plug it back in. Turn the printer on and check if it recognizes the new cartridge.
  • Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model on the HP website. Updating the firmware might resolve compatibility issues. Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Reset Printer: Sometimes, resetting the printer to its default settings can resolve various issues. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I tried cleaning contacts, unplugging printer and plugging it back in. Nothing worked so finally went and bought a new cartridge. It worked fine. The first cartridge must have been defective. I contacted HP support and they had me check several things and came to the same conclusion. The cartridge was bad. HP is sending me a new one. Thank you for your help and especially thank you to HP for standing behind their products.
