Welcome to the HP Community --

If a job stops mid-task, try to determine the reason for the failure before trying to print again.

Please read the following, then decide what to try next...

===============================

Load Paper

Sure, it's possible the paper is not loaded correctly --

Paper can be removed from the tray and "flexed" (not fanned), re-stacked, and returned to the tray.

Learn how to load or change the paper in your printer's User Guide.

Reminder

Only open the tray and / or change paper when the printer is idle, that is, do not open the tray when the printer is printing.

Open

 Product Home - Printers

Enter the device type and model name of your HP product

Next,

Open Category Setup & User Guides

Find and open the User Guide document

Search the document for "Load Paper" or "Load Media" or similar

What else?

It is possible that the paper size / paper type is not set correctly somewhere.

An incorrect Paper Size and / or Paper Type setting can result in the job failing, balking, or issuing a "continue error".

Copy jobs can balk or print V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W-L-Y when the size of the original content does not match the size of the selected paper.

"Somewhere" might include the Printer itself - the Tray and Paper settings.

Tray and Paper can typically be checked / adjusted on a full service touchscreen Printer Control Panel

OR

Tray and Paper can be set / adjusting using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Reminder

Printer Paper Size / Paper Type settings should only be checked or adjusted when the printer is idle, that is, do not interrupt active printer tasks to jump in and adjust the paper size / type settings.

=======================================

EWS - Tray and Paper

Examples - Tray and Paper

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Reminder

If asked enter the printer’s PIN number –

The default PIN might be located on the back or inside the printer (ink access area).

EWS – Tray and Paper Management

Classic EWS - InkJet Printers

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model and EWS version Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

General Example - Tray and Paper - Classic and Alternative

EWS_Tray_and_Paper_DeskJet_4EWS_Tray_and_Paper_DeskJet_4

OR

Alternate EWS format - Select new InkJet printers and select LaserJet printers

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next (as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default options / tray

Job Configuration

The following is relevant to supported versions Windows

Normally, when the printer throws an error about the paper, it will stop the current job.

In most cases, paper should be loaded in the printer tray print side down, narrow ends front and back.

The print orientation, that is, the way the content is printed on the paper, is controlled using the Orientation setting.

If, for example, the paper is loaded "wide ends" front and back and the printer does not catch the inconsistency before the job is started, the job might balk or fail when the paper is taken from the tray for its journey through the rollers.

General Example - HP Smart - Windows - Simple PDF Print

===========================

What else?

If the paper is correct for the job and loaded correctly,

If the paper is a supported weight (Plain paper, for example, is generally supported at 16-28 lbs),

If the settings are correct, current, and appropriately selected,

The printer might benefit from a Power Reset
