I've tried all options for my HP ENVY 7640 e All-in-one. The ink cartridge cannot move, open door, remove obstruction message keeps coming up. There is no paper or other obstruction anywhere. I've cleaned the ink cartridges and unplugged and rested the printer more times than I want to count. The last suggestion was to try download an update but I can't sign in as my serial number isn't accepted, I took a picture, it's correct. Is there anything else I can try? The ink cartridge seems to move freely and the belt looks fine. Upon powering up, the sounds seem correct, the ink cartridge moves a third to half the way across the print bar. It's different at times. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated besides throwing it out the window and never buying an HP

Hi @Sueisfr__7640,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel your frustration when you’ve tried everything and the printer still insists there’s an obstruction; it’s enough to make anyone want to toss it out the window. Let’s go through the most effective steps for the HP ENVY 7640 e All-in-One before giving up:

Why This Happens

  • False obstruction error due to sensor misread.
  • Carriage movement issue (even if it looks free, the sensor may not detect full travel).
  • Firmware glitch causing repeated error.

Step 1: Hard Reset

  1. With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the rear.
  2. Unplug from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug back in and power on.

(This clears memory and resets sensors.)

Step 2: Check Carriage Path Thoroughly

  • Open the ink access door.
  • Move the carriage gently left and right.
  • Inspect for:
    • Tiny scraps of paper.
    • Ink buildup on the encoder strip (the clear plastic strip behind the carriage).
  • Clean the encoder strip with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.

Step 3: Update Firmware

Even if sign-in fails, you can update manually:

(Choose “Firmware” and install via USB if Wi-Fi setup isn’t working.)

Step 4: Reset Printer Settings

  • On the printer screen: Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore Defaults.

Step 5: If Still Stuck

The carriage sensor or encoder strip may be faulty.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
