Officejet Pro 8600

I bought new cartridges, and I printed about 25 pages. Then, I didn't use the printer for about 3 weeks, and when I turned it on, it said "Ink System Failure," I have unplugged, cleaned the cartridges, restarted, and updated; and the message remains the same. I don't want to spend $100 to buy new cartridges (since I know these are almost full) to insert them and get the same message. Please help before I throw this thing out the window!
