  • I'm trying to replace my ink. When I open the lid to a fully open position I understand the carriage should automatically move to the middle so the cartridges can be pulled out and replaced. Well this isn't happening. The printer works fine besides, but the carriage stays on the right side covered by the printer casing which makes it impossible to replace the ink. Is there a way to manually move it or am I missing something here?

Hi @Cjyoung22,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the carriage of your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 isn't automatically moving to the center when you open the lid, there might be an issue with the printer's mechanism. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue.

  • Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a couple of minutes, and then plug it back in. Power it on and see if the carriage moves to the center now.
  • Manually Move the Carriage: While the printer is turned off, try to gently move the carriage manually to the center. Be very careful not to force it. If it's stuck, forcing it could potentially damage the printer further.
  • Check for Obstructions: Inspect the printer thoroughly to see if there are any obstructions, such as paper scraps or foreign objects, blocking the movement of the carriage. Remove any obstructions you find.
  • Reset the Printer: Sometimes resetting the printer to its factory settings can resolve issues. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a reset.
  • Update Firmware: Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can usually update the firmware through the printer's settings menu or by downloading the latest firmware from the HP website and following the instructions provided.

Remember to handle the printer and its components delicately to avoid causing any additional damage.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
