Hi @Throwback41 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP OfficeJet 6958 printer. Before considering replacing it, let's try a few troubleshooting steps to see if we can resolve the issues:

May I know the error message?

  • Check for Paper Jams: Even if the printer doesn't show a visible jam, there might be small shreds of paper stuck inside. Open all the access doors and remove any paper you find.
  • Inspect Cartridges: Make sure the cartridges are properly installed and seated correctly. Remove them and reseat them firmly.
  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes, dirt or debris can accumulate on the cartridge contacts, leading to errors. Gently wipe the contacts with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. This can often clear out temporary errors.
  • Update Firmware: Check if there's a firmware update available for your printer. Sometimes, updating the firmware can fix various issues.  Update the firmware on an HP printer
  • Use Genuine Cartridges: Using third-party or refilled cartridges might cause compatibility issues. Make sure you're using genuine HP cartridges.
  • Check for Obstructions: Ensure there are no obstructions in the paper path that might be causing the errors.
  • Factory Reset: As a last resort, you can try performing a factory reset on the printer. This will restore all settings to their default values. Instructions for this should be available in the printer's manual or on HP's support website.

I hope this helps.
