Hi @Roselie1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue so clearly—error 0x80070103 during Windows Update typically means Windows is trying to install a duplicate or incompatible driver, often for USB or printer-related components. This can block scanning and cause device misbehavior, especially with HP OfficeJet Pro 8022e.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to restore scanning and clear the update error.

Step-by-Step Fix for Error 0x80070103 and Scanning Issues

1. Uninstall Conflicting HP Drivers

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Imaging Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Printers.
  • Right-click any HP-related entries (especially USB or scan drivers) → choose Uninstall device.
  • Check Delete the driver software for this device if prompted.
  • Restart your PC.

2. Clear Windows Update Cache

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Run these commands one by one:
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
    del /f /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download
    net start wuauserv
    net start bits
  • This clears corrupted update files that may be triggering the error.

3. Reinstall HP Software Using Full Package

4.  Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool (Windows)

  • In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Let it run a scan—it will automatically fix common connection issues.
You can also access this tool on HP’s support page if needed.

5. Block Problematic Driver Update (Optional)

If the error keeps recurring:

  • Download Microsoft’s Show or Hide Updates Troubleshooter:
    Download Link
  • Use it to hide the HP USB driver update causing the 0x80070103 error.

You can refer to HP’s scanning troubleshooting guide here:
HP Printers – Scanner Not Working or Not Found (Windows)

This page includes visuals and model-specific steps to restore scanning functionality.

Let me know how your printer responds after these steps—I’ll guide you further if needed.
