HP Deskjet 3720
Microsoft Windows XP (64-bit)

The colour ink cartridge that was in the initial ink pack worked to start with and then started to intermittently go faulty. To start with switching printer on off cleared the error. Now it’s permanent and it won’t go on line, so I can’t print. Trying cleaning the head contacts and the cartridge mounting point. No effect. Suspect cartridge is faulty and I need a replacement sent. Please advise. Thanks.

Hi! @JaneJ26, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand you are getting ink cartridge errors on the printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy of your printer?

Have you tried printing using a different ink cartridge?

Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.

Try printing a Print Quality Diagnostic report and check if the printer is printing in all the colours.

Replace any low, empty or faulty ink cartridges the printer.

Make sure the ink cartridges are correctly installed

The printer might display an error if the ink cartridges are not correctly installed. Remove the ink cartridges, check them for any plastic tape, reinstall the ink cartridges, and then try to print again.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Open the ink cartridge access door.

The carriage moves to the center of the printer.

  3. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  4. Gently press down on the ink cartridge to release it, and then pull the ink cartridge out of its slot.

Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. Inspect for and remove any protective tape from the contacts.

       CAUTION:

Do not try to remove the copper electrical strip.

  6. Hold the ink cartridge by its sides with the contacts toward the printer, insert the ink cartridge into its slot, and then gently push the ink cartridge until it snaps into place.

    NOTE:

Install the color ink cartridge on the left and the black ink cartridge on the right.
