Printer HP LJ MFP M234dwe shows after power-on "49" in the display, no connection to the printer is possible, neither per WiFi nor per network cable. So no updates can take place. Done several resets following the instructions in the internet, nothing changed. Printer is 3 years old, uses original HP Toner. What can I do?

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I’m really sorry this has happened—especially when your HP LaserJet MFP M234dwe was working reliably and now shows a cryptic “49” error with no connectivity. That “49” code typically signals a firmware crash or internal communication fault, and when it appears immediately at power-on, it means the printer can’t even initialize its basic functions.
Let’s walk through how to recover it.
Step-by-step actions to resolve error “49” on HP LJ MFP M234dwe
Perform a full power reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall
- Disconnect all cables (USB, Ethernet, phone line, etc.)
- Wait 60 seconds
- Plug it back in and power on with no cables attached
- If the error clears, reconnect one cable at a time to isolate the trigger
Attempt a forced firmware recovery via USB
- On another PC, download the latest firmware from HP:
HP LJ MFP M234dwe – Firmware Update - Use the HP Firmware Utility to create a recovery USB
- Insert the USB into the printer while powered off
- Power on and wait—if the printer accepts the update, it may reboot automatically
Try HP’s Diagnose & Fix tool (if printer partially responds)
- Download from:
HP Diagnose & Fix – Windows - This tool checks for firmware faults and attempts recovery over USB or network
Inspect for hardware faults
- If the error appears instantly and persists across resets, the formatter board or controller may be locked
- This typically requires service-level reflash or replacement
Let me know if the printer shows any signs of life after the USB attempt or if the display changes—I’ll guide you through next steps.
You’ve done everything right by using original toner and trying resets, and we’ll make sure you have a clear path forward.

Hi Hawks_Eye, thank you for support. I aslo support, that firmware is destroyed. Unfortunately Full power reset didn't work (as earlier). I'd like to try the firmware update, the firmware I found on HP's website, but I cannot find the HP Firmware Utility. Where from can I get this utility? Thanks, regards Spessartbikerin
