Microsoft Windows 11

I have a document that contains two columns oriented in the landscape format with a font size of 11.  The document also has print on the back side.  I want to print it on letter size paper.  When attempting to print using a HP MFP M283cdw Laser Jet Pro it does not auto detect paper size of 'letter'.  Instead it detects 'legal' size paper even though letter size is what is in the paper tray.  The printer used to automatically detect the correct paper size.  When manually changing to the correct paper size, 'letter', the font size remains the same, but the entire document is shifted such that the left-hand column spills over into the second column.  This then pushes text over to create a second sheet of paper.  The paper tray is set up correctly, to fit only letter size paper.

This printer does not have automatic paper detection switches in the tray cavity. That feature is on Laserjet 500 series products and higher. You must manually change the paper size see page 135 of the user guide here https://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06431905.pdf

You may have had a configuration of either driver or printer settings that gave you the impression that the printer was automatically choosing paper size, but it does not. You could try setting on the printer itself the paper size to any and paper type to any. I normally do not recommend this setting option but if it works for you.
