I have been using my LaserJet M1212nf MFP printer for around 10 years. It suddenly stopped working yesterday. The printer keeps getting stuck on the initializing stage and it is shown as offline on my computer. I have tried unplugging both my printer and restarting my computer already . I ran the troubleshooting tool and it said there is an issue with my printer spooler.  I tried stopping and starting my printer spooler but it didn't work either. I should mention that my computer keeps making the USB disconnect sound every few seconds when the printer is connected to my computer . I have tried using different USB ports in my computer but it keeps making the disconnect sound whenever the printer is connected.

Hi @hf92,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP LaserJet M1212nf MFP printer is getting stuck on “Initializing” and showing offline on your computer. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

a. Power Reset

With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Wait for 60 seconds.

Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).

Reconnect it to the printer and power it back on.

b. Disconnect All Cables

Unplug the USB cable from both the printer and your computer.

Also disconnect the phone line or Ethernet cable if connected.

Turn the printer back on with only the power cable connected.

If the printer still stays stuck on “Initializing,” proceed to the next step.

c. Perform an NVRAM Reset

Power off the printer.

Press and hold the “Right Arrow (►)” and “Cancel (X)” buttons together.

While holding the buttons, power the printer back on.

Keep holding until the display shows “Permanent Storage Init” or it restarts to the main menu.

This clears internal errors and may release the printer from the initializing loop.

d. Check the USB Connection

Use a different USB cable (preferably under 2 meters long).

Avoid using USB hubs or front panel ports; connect directly to the rear USB port of your computer.

Once connected, listen for the connection sound and check Device Manager → Printers to see if it appears.

If it keeps disconnecting, it’s likely a firmware or hardware communication fault within the printer.

e. Reinstall Printer Drivers

Disconnect the printer USB cable.

Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers, remove all HP LaserJet M1212nf entries.

Go to Programs and Features, uninstall all HP printer software.

Restart your PC.

Download the latest Full Feature Software and Drivers from HP’s official site and reinstall them.

Reconnect the USB cable only when prompted during installation.

I hope this helps.
