Help,

My printer was purchased in May 2024 and will no longer power on.  I tried unplugging it and waiting for several hours but it will not power on.  Any ideas?

Hi @MikeE16

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

When a relatively new printer like the HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3301 fdw refuses to power on, especially after being unplugged and left idle, it’s understandable to feel stuck. Let’s walk through a structured set of checks to help isolate the issue and determine whether it’s something you can resolve—or if it requires service under warranty.

Step-by-Step Recovery

1. Confirm Power Source Integrity

  • Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet, avoiding surge protectors or extension cords.
  • Try a different outlet that you know is working.
  • If possible, test the outlet with another device (e.g., a lamp or phone charger).

2. Inspect the Power Cord and Connection

  • Ensure the power cord is firmly seated in both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Look for any visible damage or loose connectors.
  • If you have access to another compatible HP power cord, try swapping it temporarily.

3. Perform a Power Reset

  • Unplug the printer completely.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Leave the printer unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and press the Power button briefly (do not hold it down).

Some HP models may turn on with a short press, while holding the button too long can cause a false shutdown.

4. Check for Internal Power Supply Fault

If the printer still does not respond:

  • There may be a failure in the internal power module.
  • No lights, sounds, or fan movement typically indicate a hardware fault.

You can review HP’s official Power-On Troubleshooting Guide for additional steps.

You’ve done everything right—let’s make sure your printer gets the attention it deserves.

This solution did NOT work!

I still have a 15 month only $450 printer that will not turn on. Disappointed in the quality and lack of any support from HP. I called the HP support center and was told it was out of warranty, there is no option to purchase HP support or even get a list of HP authorized repair centers. Basically I was told to "google" it.

@MikeE16, My colleague is currently out, but don't worry – I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.

I can hear the frustration in your message—having a fairly new printer just sit dark and lifeless is definitely not what you’d expect. Let’s see if we can narrow this down a bit more.

A couple of quick questions before we go deeper:

When you press the power button, do you notice any signs of life—like a brief flicker of light, a fan hum, or even a click sound?

Are you plugging directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector or UPS), and have you already tried another outlet or power cord?

Was there any power surge, outage, or unusual smell/noise from the printer before it stopped working?

Here are a few things worth trying again step by step:

Direct Wall Test – Plug the printer straight into a different wall socket that you’ve confirmed works with another device (like a phone charger).

Cord Check – Inspect the cord carefully for bends or burn marks. If you have access to another compatible HP cord, swap it in.

Hard Reset – With the printer unplugged, hold the power button down for 15–20 seconds, then leave it unplugged for 2 minutes before reconnecting.

Signs of Power – When you reconnect, press the power button once briefly (holding it too long can sometimes mimic a shutdown).

If there’s still no response—no lights, no fan movement—this usually points to an internal power supply failure. At that stage, repair or replacement is the only way forward.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

That is no life when I plug it in.  I tried everything you suggested.   The $450 dollar printer only lasted for 15 months!  So much for HP quality.   Seems that after only 15 months the internal power supply failed.   HP only offers a pathetic 12 month warranty, seems my only option is repair or replace at my expense.

I am very disappointed in HP!
