Hi @ren2310

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like the sheet tray on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9012 is not closing properly, even though the printer is still functioning normally. This issue could be caused by a few different factors, such as an obstruction in the tray, a misalignment, or a mechanical issue with the drawer itself. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Check for Obstructions

The first step is to check for any debris, paper, or small objects that could be preventing the tray from closing completely.

  • Open the sheet tray and carefully inspect the area for any paper jams, scraps of paper, or foreign objects that might be obstructing the drawer from closing.
  • Gently remove any debris you find, and try closing the tray again.

2. Check Tray Alignment

Sometimes the tray might become misaligned, preventing it from closing correctly.

  • Reposition the tray: Pull the tray out completely, and ensure it is aligned properly when you reinsert it. Ensure that there’s no warping or bending of the tray edges that might prevent it from aligning properly.
  • Make sure the paper guides in the tray are adjusted to the correct paper size and that they are not blocking the movement of the tray.

3. Inspect the Tray Rails

If the tray is still not closing properly, the issue might be with the tray rails or the mechanism that holds the tray.

  • Gently inspect the rails along the sides of the tray to ensure they are not obstructed or out of place.
  • Check for damage to the rails or any parts of the mechanism that might prevent the tray from closing.

4. Reset the Printer

A reset can sometimes help if the tray is not closing due to a software or sensor issue.

  • Turn off the printer, wait for a minute, and then turn it back on. After resetting the printer, try closing the tray again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

If blocked you mean sticking out when closed then likely the tray has been switched to legal size (or equivalent Euro size). There is a lever on the inside of the front face of the tray that you push and then shrink the tray back down to A4 mode. The user guide at support.hp.com will show how to do it if this is not clear.
