Dear HP supporters,

why do the printers always fail without proper error messages? It should be possible to send the document to the printer and show a status bar for that and then when the document is printing also show a status bar or a percentage when you go the the printer queue. When an error occurs the computer should show an error message. Also, it should be possible to cancel the print job at any time, which is not possible.

Instead there is are always the usual problems with HP printers:

- print job doesn't appear in the queue

- job shows printing but never gets ready

- it shows "unknown status"

- old, unsuccessful print jobs can't be deleted.

 

We could go through each of these problems together and discuss them in detail but my request would be that you sit together in the company and test these printers and write down all the usual problems and then to solve them. You could also learn from the Chinese people, my 3D printer works much more reliable and if there is a problem, a proper error message is displayed and I can choose to cancel the job. I can also offer to work in your company for some time until these problems are solved. I am a programmer.

My printer is HP Deskjet 2540, but the exact number doesn't matter. They all have these problems.

Also, everbody has these problems.

Please let me know if you want to take action and if I can help. Of course we would need to talk about salary.

It sounds like you're dealing with some frustrating issues with your HP Deskjet 2540 printer. Let's try to address these problems one by one:

Common Issues and Solutions

Print Job Doesn't Appear in the Queue:

  • Ensure your printer is properly connected to your computer or network. Sometimes, a loose connection can cause print jobs to not appear in the queue.
  • Restart both your printer and computer to refresh the connection.

Job Shows Printing but Never Gets Ready:

  • This could be due to a stuck print job. Try clearing the print queue by stopping the print spooler service. Here's how:
  • Open the Run dialog (Windows key + R), type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Find the Print Spooler service, right-click it, and select Stop.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS and delete all files in this folder.
  • Restart your computer and printer.

Unknown Status:

  • This often indicates a communication issue between your printer and computer. Ensure your printer drivers are up to date.
  • Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to diagnose and fix issues.

Old, Unsuccessful Print Jobs Can't Be Deleted:

  • Similar to clearing stuck print jobs, you can manually delete these jobs by stopping the print spooler service and clearing the PRINTERS folder.
  • If the jobs still won't delete, you might need to reset the printer settings or reinstall the printer drivers.

Improving Error Messages and Print Job Management

HP printers do have some tools and features that can help improve error handling and print job management:

  • HP Smart App: This app can help you manage print jobs, check printer status, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Diagnose & Fix Tool: Available in the HP Smart app, this tool can automatically diagnose and fix common printing errors.

Canceling Print Jobs

You should be able to cancel print jobs from both the printer control panel and your computer:

 

  • From the Printer Control Panel: Press the Cancel button or touch X, Stop, or Cancel on the touchscreen.
  • From Your Computer: Open the print queue, right-click the print job, and select Cancel.
