Hi @ptb_pol,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're unable to access the administrator settings on your HP LaserJet MFP 225DW printer because you don't know the password, and you’ve never set one, you may need to perform a factory reset to regain access. Unfortunately, HP printers don’t have universal default passwords like some other devices. Here's how you can handle the situation:
1. Perform a Factory Reset
Since you cannot access the menu due to the password issue, you will need to perform a factory reset through the printer's hardware buttons or using a special reset method if available.
Hard Reset Method:
Turn Off the Printer:
- Press the power button to turn off the printer.
Disconnect Power:
- Unplug the power cord from the printer and wait for about 30 seconds.
Reconnect Power and Start the Reset:
- Plug the power cord back in, but do not turn on the printer just yet.
Perform the Reset:
- Press and Hold the Cancel Button on the control panel.
- While holding the Cancel button, press the Power button to turn the printer back on.
- Continue to hold the Cancel button until you see the printer’s control panel display begin to change.
Wait for the Reset to Complete:
- The printer should perform a hard reset, restoring factory settings. This process might take a few minutes.
2. Use HP Web Jetadmin (If Available)
If you have HP Web Jetadmin or similar management software installed on your network, you can sometimes manage and reset printer settings through that tool. However, this typically requires that the printer be connected and accessible on the network.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @ptb_pol,
Thank your response. If you’ve never set an administrator password for your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M225dw and you’re unable to reset the printer to factory settings because you don’t have the password, you can try the following steps:
1. Default Passwords
The default passwords for HP printers are often blank or simple combinations. Since you've tried some common defaults without success, let's explore other options:
Try Common Defaults:
- Blank: Sometimes, the default password might be blank (no entry).
- 12345678 or 1111: These are common default passwords for many devices.
Check Documentation:
- Printer Manual: Review the printer’s manual or online documentation to see if there is a default password listed.
2. Hard Reset / Factory Reset
If default passwords don't work, you can try a hard reset or factory reset to restore the printer to its original settings. However, HP LaserJet printers often don’t have a direct factory reset option from the menu. Here’s what you can do:
Power Cycle Method:
- Turn Off Printer: Switch off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait: Leave it unplugged for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Reconnect and Restart: Plug the printer back in and turn it on. Sometimes, this can clear temporary settings or issues.
Use the Control Panel:
- Admin Menu Access: Try accessing the Administration or Setup menu directly and navigate to the Restore Defaults option if available. Note that this might require a password if it has been set.
3. Use HP’s Software Tools
HP Web Jetadmin:
- Download HP Web Jetadmin: HP Web Jetadmin is a free tool from HP that can manage and configure HP printers on a network.
- Access Printer Settings: Install and use this tool to access and reset the printer settings, which might help in resetting to factory defaults.
HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- Download HP Print and Scan Doctor: While this tool is mainly for troubleshooting printing and scanning issues, it can sometimes assist with resetting printer settings.
- Run Diagnostic: Follow the tool’s instructions to see if it offers any options for resetting the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
