Microsoft Windows 11

I have installed new HP ink into my HP Officejet Pro 8600, Model no. N911a, and now I have tried all the videos to get it to print. STILL getting the message " There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP"  My printer is out of warranty, but has always worked perfectly. I am stumped. Have tried cleaning cartridges (they are new) cleaning inside the cartridge carriage, wiggling the carriage after unlocking it, unplugging and plugging back in multiple times.  Stumped. I hate that HP ink costs so much, and now my printer is rejecting it, it seems.

Hi @Cape-Cod-Writer,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your HP Officejet Pro 8600 despite installing new HP ink and attempting several troubleshooting steps. Here are a few additional steps that might help resolve the "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" message.

Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This can reset internal components and may resolve the issue.

Inspect the Ink Cartridges

  • Ensure the cartridges are genuine HP and compatible with your printer model (e.g., HP 950 or 951).
  • Double-check that the protective tape on the cartridges has been completely removed.
  • Re-seat the cartridges: Remove each ink cartridge and reinstall it, ensuring it snaps into place securely.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Power off the printer and carefully remove the ink cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Allow the contacts to dry for a few minutes before reinstalling the cartridges.

Update Firmware

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Outdated firmware may cause compatibility issues with newer ink cartridges. You can update the firmware via the HP Support website or the HP Smart app if the printer is still able to communicate with your network.

Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall.
  • While the printer is unplugged, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the printer to power and turn it on.

Bypass the Ink System Warning

  • Some users report that this issue can sometimes be bypassed by pressing the OK button repeatedly when the error appears. This might allow the printer to continue despite the error.

Check for Printhead Issues

  • If the issue persists, it could be related to the printhead. Some HP OfficeJet models allow you to remove and clean the printhead.
    • Remove the printhead (if accessible) and clean it using distilled water and a lint-free cloth.
    • After drying, reinstall the printhead and cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
