Hi @Hookem85

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Missing or Failed Printhead" error message on your HP printer can be frustrating, especially if you've already attempted some basic troubleshooting steps like resetting the printer and cleaning the ink housing. This error typically occurs when the printhead is either not recognized, is malfunctioning, or there’s an issue with the connection between the printhead and the printer.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the "Missing or Failed Printhead" error:

1. Check for Printhead Alignment and Seating

The most common cause of this error is that the printhead is not properly seated in its carriage or there is a poor connection.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Carefully remove the printhead from its slot (refer to your printer’s manual for instructions on how to remove it properly).
  • Inspect the printhead for any visible damage or obstructions.
  • Clean the printhead connectors gently with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water. Be sure not to damage the connectors or use harsh chemicals.
  • Reinstall the printhead, ensuring that it is seated properly and securely in its carriage.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

A hard reset can help clear any lingering software glitches or communication issues between the printer and the printhead.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Leave it unplugged for at least 1 minute.
  • After waiting, plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Try printing again to see if the error message disappears.

3. Check for Firmware Updates

Sometimes, a firmware update can fix issues related to hardware components like the printhead.

  • Go to HP Support: Visit the HP Support website for your specific printer model.
  • Download and install any available firmware updates for your printer.

4. Inspect the Printer for Ink Leaks or Electrical Issues

  • Check for ink leaks or excess ink around the printhead and ink cartridge area, as this could cause a poor connection or clog the printhead.
  • Inspect the printer’s electrical connectors where the printhead connects to the printer. Dirt, dust, or damage in this area could interfere with the communication between the printhead and the printer.

5. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

If there’s a software-related issue, resetting the printer to its factory default settings may help resolve the issue.

  • On the printer's control panel, go to Settings or Setup > Restore Factory Defaults (the exact menu option may vary by model).
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
