Hi @BobSh2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Encountering a "Missing or Failed Printhead" error message on your HP printer after returning from vacation can be frustrating. Here are steps to help troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Steps to Resolve "Missing or Failed Printhead" Error

Restart the Printer

  • Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear temporary errors.

Check Printhead Installation

  • Open the printer access door and ensure that the printhead is installed correctly.
  • If the printhead is removable, remove it and then reinsert it firmly into its slot.

Inspect for Obstructions

  • Carefully inspect the printhead area for any obstructions, such as paper scraps or debris, that may be preventing the printhead from moving properly.

Clean Printhead Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Remove the printhead (if possible) and clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and in the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the printhead.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit the HP support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest firmware update available for your printer. Updating firmware can sometimes resolve printhead issues.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Sometimes a hard reset can clear persistent errors:
    • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the printer and from the wall outlet.
    • Wait at least 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.
    • Turn the printer back on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
