@HSF3, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If your HP Envy 4500 printer is displaying an "incompatible error" message with cartridges, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can take:

Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges that are compatible with your printer model. For the HP ENVY 4500 series, compatible cartridge numbers include:

Proper Installation: Make sure the cartridges are installed correctly. Here’s how you can replace them:

  • Load plain white paper into the input tray.
  • Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the access area.
  • Remove the unrecognized cartridge and reinsert it, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

Remove and Reinstall: Lift the cartridge access lid, gently push back the lid of the cartridge slot, and remove the cartridge. Then, reinstall the cartridge ensuring that the contact points are facing the rear of the printer. Make sure each cartridge is in the correct slot (black on the right, color on the left).

Inspect Cartridges: Check the cartridges for any damages or dirt on the copper-colored contacts. Clean them carefully with a lint-free cloth if necessary.

Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, wait a moment, then turn it back on to see if the error persists.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
