HI @Donald83,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP OfficeJet 8020e printer is printing a single vertical line on each page, it could be due to several reasons, such as debris on the printhead, a dirty scanner glass, or an issue with the print cartridges. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Step 1: Clean the Printhead

Run the Printhead Cleaning Tool:

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Setup menu.
  • Select Printer Maintenance or Tools.
  • Choose Clean Printhead and follow the on-screen instructions.

Manually Clean the Printhead:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the printer and remove the printhead.
  • Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water to gently clean the nozzles.
  • Allow the printhead to dry completely before reinserting it into the printer.

Step 2: Clean the Scanner Glass

Turn off the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.

Clean the Scanner Glass:

  • Open the scanner lid.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with glass cleaner or distilled water to clean the scanner glass.
  • Ensure there are no smudges, dust, or debris on the glass.

Clean the Document Feeder Glass (if applicable):

  • If your printer has an automatic document feeder (ADF), clean the small strip of glass adjacent to the main scanner glass as well.

Step 3: Check and Clean the Print Cartridges

Remove and Inspect the Cartridges:

  • Open the printer and remove the ink cartridges.
  • Inspect the cartridges for any damage or debris.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.

Reinstall the Cartridges:

  • Reinstall the cartridges and ensure they are properly seated.

Step 4: Perform a Printer Reset

Turn off the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.Wait for about 60 seconds.

Plug in and Turn on the Printer:

  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Step 5: Print a Test Page

  1. Print a Test Page:
    • Print a test page to see if the issue is resolved.Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance or Tools > Print Quality Report.

Step 6: Update the Printer Firmware

  1. Check for Firmware Updates:
    • Ensure that your printer firmware is up-to-date.Go to the HP Support website and download the latest firmware for your printer model.Follow the instructions to update the firmware.

Step 7: Align the Printhead

  1. Run the Printhead Alignment Tool:
    • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Setup menu.Select Printer Maintenance or Tools.
    • Choose Align Printhead and follow the on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
