Hi @PeterC77

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing this—it’s understandably frustrating when your printer suddenly refuses to connect due to a certificate error, especially when everything else seems to be working fine.

To reset an expired certificate on your HP printer using an iMac, you’ll need to access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) and manually generate a new self-signed certificate. This refreshes the encryption credentials and restores secure communication.

You’ve already taken the right step by identifying the issue, and we’ll now walk through how to reset the certificate and get your printer communicating smoothly again.

Steps to Reset an Expired Certificate on HP Printer (macOS)

1. Find the Printer’s IP Address

  • On the printer’s control panel, print a Network Configuration Page or Printer Status Report.
  • Look for the IP Address (e.g., 192.168.x.x).

2. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Open Safari or any browser on your iMac.
  • Type the printer’s IP address into the address bar and press Enter.
  • This opens the printer’s Embedded Web Server interface.

3. Log In to the Printer’s Admin Console

  • If prompted, enter the admin username and password.
  • If you haven’t set one, try leaving the fields blank or use “admin” as the username.

4. Navigate to the Security Settings

  • Go to Settings > Security > Certificate Management or Networking > Advanced Settings > HTTPS Settings.
  • Locate the section for SSL/TLS Certificate or Encryption Credentials.

5. Create a New Self-Signed Certificate

  • Click Create New Certificate or Generate Self-Signed Certificate.
  • Fill in the required fields (you can leave most as default).
  • Save and apply the changes.

6. Restart the Printer

  • Power off the printer, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on.
  • Try printing or scanning again from your iMac using the HP App or AirPrint.

  • Visit the official driver page: HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your printer model and download the latest firmware update for macOS.
  • Install it using the HP App or directly from the EWS interface.

You’ve already done everything right by identifying the certificate issue—just a few more steps and your printer should be back to secure, seamless operation.
