my relatively new HP smart tank 5100 series. Printer only works about 25% of the time. it just says printer error, and then printer is busy. Do I need to return this? Anyone else having this issue? How do I fix it

@Skilled73, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP smart tank 5100 series!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP Smart Tank 5100 series printer is giving errors and indicating that it is busy, there are several steps you can try to resolve the issue yourself before considering a return. Here are some common troubleshooting steps:

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Open the printer and check for any paper jams or debris inside the printer. Remove any found.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer firmware is up to date. You can check for updates using the HP Support Assistant or manually from the printer's control panel.

Printer Reset:

  • Perform a 'factory reset' on your printer. Consult the printer’s manual for instructions on how to perform a reset.

Driver Update:

  • Ensure your printer drivers are up to date. You can update the drivers via the HP website.

Network Issues:

  • If your printer is connected over Wi-Fi, ensure the network connection is stable. Sometimes moving the printer closer to your router or restarting your router can help.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
