LaserJet M551

My Laserjet M551 printer has stopped printing from my USB cable for my Mac Book Pro Sonoma version.  It has never been able to read from the USB input on the printer.

I get

ERROR: undefended

OFFENDING COMMAND: MS-Bold-861 code

I have unplugged from the wall and restarted my computer. I did print one time after that but is again giving the same error code. Please help.

It sounds like you're encountering a frustrating issue with your LaserJet M551. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the "ERROR: undefended" and "OFFENDING COMMAND: MS-Bold-861 code" errors when printing via USB from your MacBook Pro:

1. Check Printer and USB Connections:

  • Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and the MacBook.
  • If possible, try using a different USB cable to rule out a faulty cable.

2. Update Printer Drivers:

  • Make sure you have the latest drivers for the LaserJet M551:
    • Go to the HP Support website.
    • Download and install the latest driver compatible with macOS Sonoma.

3. Reset the Printing System:

  • Resetting the printing system can sometimes resolve persistent printing issues:
    • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    • Right-click (or Control-click) in the Printers list and select Reset printing system.
    • This will remove all printers from your list, so you will need to add your printer again afterward.

4. Reinstall the Printer:
