A while ago I changed ink but forgot to align paper.

After printing I was alerted that the paper was out. I added paper, and went to the front display to tap 'ok' and it wouldn't recieve my responds. Oddly I can print from devices but I'm unable to walk to printer and copy anything using the Front Display  without going through a device. While on the Smart HP app, it says it's online, up-to-date on drivers, firmware with paper loaded. I have new black ink in it but the color might have been the one I needed to change (currently don't have a replacement).

Is there a fix?

I have tried to fix by unplugging it and hoping it resets it. Nope didn't do anything.  Anyone have this issue? I guess maybe when ink runs out - upgrade to a new printer is my fix?

Hi @CYNDY101,

Thank you for your response,

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 4650 is facing an issue with its touchscreen not responding, and while you can still print, you're unable to use the front display for functions like copying. There could be several reasons for this.

  • Display Calibration or Faulty Touchscreen: The touchscreen might need recalibration, or it could have a hardware issue. Sometimes, dust or debris on the screen can affect its responsiveness.
  • Firmware or Software Glitch: Even if the drivers are up-to-date, a firmware glitch could still cause issues with the touchscreen. A reset might not always clear deeper issues.
  • Ink Cartridge Issue: Since you mentioned the color ink might be low, some printers restrict certain functions (like copying or scanning) until all cartridges are properly installed and at adequate levels. Even if the black ink is new, the printer could still be expecting color ink to function fully.
  • Unresponsive Touch Screen Due to Paper Jam or Loading: Sometimes, if there’s a minor paper jam or if the printer has detected something unusual, it can disable the touchscreen temporarily until the issue is resolved.

Steps to Try:

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect it from the power source for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.
  • This might help clear temporary glitches.

Clean the Screen:

  • Gently wipe the touchscreen with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove any dirt, oils, or smudges that could interfere with touch sensitivity.

Check Ink Cartridges:

  • Make sure the color ink cartridges are properly installed and have enough ink. If you’re missing one, it could disable certain functions.
  • If you're unable to replace the color cartridge immediately, try resetting the printer and see if it allows limited functionality, such as copying or scanning, using just the black ink.

Recalibrate the Touchscreen (if available):

  • Check the printer’s settings or user manual for any options to recalibrate the touchscreen. This can sometimes restore its responsiveness.

Firmware Update:

  • Even though it says the printer is up-to-date, you can check HP’s website for any newer firmware releases for your printer model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
