Welcome to the HP Support community!

If the carriage is not moving to the center, preventing you from changing the cartridges, here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

  1. Restart the Printer:

    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    • Wait approximately 30 seconds.
    • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This may reset the carriage mechanism.
  2. Check for Obstructions:

    • Open the printer cover to ensure there are no paper jams or obstructions blocking the carriage path.
    • Use a flashlight to inspect carefully for any foreign objects.
  3. Access the Carriage Manually:

    • With the printer off, gently move the carriage towards the center manually if possible.
    • Be careful not to apply too much force, as this can damage the printer.
  4. Confirm Lid/Sensor Position:

    • Ensure the printer lid or door is properly closed.
    • Some printers have a sensor that won't allow carriage movement if not securely closed.
  5. Update Printer Firmware:

    • Visit the HP Support Website to check if there's a firmware update for your printer model.
    • Apply any updates and attempt to power cycle your printer again.
  6. Perform a Power Reset:

    • Disconnect the power cable while the printer is on.
    • Wait at least 60 seconds.
    • Reconnect the power cable, turn the printer back on, and check for carriage movement.
  7. Check Printer Settings:

    • On the printer control panel, try accessing the setup or maintenance menu to find an option for replacing cartridges or aligning them.
  8. Use HP Smart or Software:

    • If you have HP Smart software or any HP utility tools installed on your computer, check if there is a maintenance feature for cartridge replacement.
