Hi @Vamz,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since your HP OfficeJet 4655 All-in-One Printer briefly turns on when connected to power but does not fully start up, the issue could be related to the power supply, internal hardware, or a firmware glitch. Try these troubleshooting steps.

Power Reset the Printer

  1. Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  2. Wait at least 2 minutes to allow the printer's internal components to discharge.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
  5. Reconnect the power cable to the printer and try turning it on.

Check for Power Issues

  • Try using a different power outlet.
  • If possible, test with another compatible power cord or adapter.
  • If the printer is connected through a power strip, plug it directly into the wall.

Perform a Forced Reset

  1. Unplug the power cord from the printer.
  2. Press and hold the power button while plugging the power cord back in.
  3. Keep holding the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Release the button and check if the printer turns on normally.

Inspect for Hardware Issues

  • If the printer powers on briefly but then shuts off, it could indicate:
    • Faulty power supply: The internal power board may be failing.
    • Overheating issue: Internal components might be preventing startup.
    • Firmware corruption: A failed update could have caused the problem.

Try a Firmware Recovery (if possible)

If the printer screen shows HP logo or error messages before shutting down, there might be a chance to update the firmware:

  1. Connect the printer to your PC via USB.
  2. Visit the HP Software and Drivers page.
  3. Download and install the latest firmware update for your printer.
  4. Follow on-screen instructions to attempt a recovery.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Tried but no success. Still same behavior. I don't see error message or blue screen, not able to upgrade firmware. Please suggest what are my options to get the printer working again

Hi @Vamz, Thank you for your response.

Since you've already tried power resets, checking power sources, forced resets, and firmware recovery without success, here are some advanced troubleshooting steps:

Perform a Semi-Full Reset (Hard Reset)

This reset restores factory settings and can help resolve firmware-related failures. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  2. Press and hold both the “#” and “3” buttons on the printer’s control panel.
  3. While holding these buttons, reconnect the power cord and continue holding the buttons for about 20 seconds.
  4. Release the buttons and check if the printer starts up normally.

If this doesn't work, try again with:

  • # and 6 → Semi-Full Reset (resets deeper settings).
  • # and 9 → Full NVRAM Reset (use only as a last resort).

Check for Internal Hardware Failure

If the printer powers on briefly and then shuts down with no error message, the issue could be hardware-related:

  • Power Module Failure: If you have access to another compatible HP power adapter, try swapping it to see if the printer remains on.
  • Internal Power Supply Issue: The internal power board may have failed. If the printer is out of warranty, you might need to have it repaired or replaced.

Try a Different Boot Mode (Diagnostic Mode)

If the printer is responding before shutting down, you can try entering Service Mode:

  1. Power off the printer.
  2. Hold down Back and OK (or Cancel and OK) buttons together.
  3. While holding them, turn on the printer.
  4. If it enters a diagnostic menu, look for "Reset" or "Firmware Recovery" options.

If our solution hit the spot, please click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left as that would make our day!

Take care, and have an incredible day ahead!
