I just bought a J6480 Saturday.  90% of the time when I issue a print command it returns a paper jam message.  I check and there is in fact no paper jam.  I hit the OK button and it prints (with my not having touched anything in the paper path).   I'm guessing a defective sensor, but am open to any ideas about fixes.

Hi Clay,

This is the last option. Try unplugging power cord from both ends. Wait for a minute or two. Reconnect power cord direclty to the wall outlet. While the other end of the cord is still unplug, hold pound and three buttons on the printer. While holding pound and three buttons on the printer, reconnect the power cord to the back and then release the buttons. Follow the on-screen instructions. Let me know if it works.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to respond.  Much appreciated.  However I know how to clear a paper jam when there is a real one.  The problem in this case is that the jam message is false.  There is actually no jam to clear, no debris of any kind in the paper path to clear out, etc.  The is shown both by careful physical inspection and by the fact that when you hit the OK button to tell the machine you have cleared the nonexistant jam, it goes on its merry way.

Make absolutely certain that you have the correct paper type selected for the tray you are trying to print from.  This can cause a false paper jam if you request a job on letter plain but the printer thinks it has A4 installed, pressing resume will let the printer take the available paper regardless of what size it thinks it is.

No on-screen instructions, just a brief message something like "Part. NUM reset."  Now printer appears offline.    Do I need to do a reinstall?

May I know if you mean by printer is offline, the printer icon is offline right?, if that is the case then the issue maybe with the software of the All-in-One printer, however since you are unable to print and getting an paper jam error message then the issue is with the hardware of the printer and I suggest you to perform an power cycle of the printer by following the steps below:

1)Verify that the unit is switched on. Unplug the power at the back    of the copier.
2) Wait 30 seconds,Plug in the power .
3) Repeat steps 1-3 two more times.
4) On the third time plug back the power cord to the printer.

After finishing the above steps plugin the printer and let us know the error messge as it appears on the printer.

If the error message displays as paper jam then the issue is with the hardware of the printer and I recommend you to contact our Technical Support for further assistance.

Thanks Smartfriend, your reset suggestion, followed by removing all the software and doing a reinstall seems to have done it.  Will post further should the problem recur.

I have this same issue.. however it occured when I first turned the machine on to print the alignment page.

First I briefly had a cartiridge error, that went away quickly and then it turned into a non-existant paper jam.

I thought perhaps I left tape on somewhere and it was messing it up but I checked all around and it seems to be fine still. -- Cartiridges are in secure and tight, I followed the pound/3 method to do that reset, it didn't resolve it either. -- Is there perhaps something I'm missing.

I'm wondering if it got damaged in shipping, or  something along those lines.
