Surprise!  J6450 gives the same false paper jam errors (with no paper jams present OR paper touching)...resets sometimes clear it but the problems ALWAYS comes back (often with a loud grinding noise).   AND now false cartridge error...wants me to replace right/black cartridge...I did...still will not recognize cartridge...took cartridge out for testsing...full and fine...prints in another printer!  AND now...loud grinding noise when I open top to remove and replace cartridge.  RESET takes me back to locked machine with cartridge error and do not want to waste any more time or money on new cartridges.  Offshore support scripted, time consuming, and very wasteful...insisted I have a paper jam even though I know about paper jams and I do NOT have one.

Third HP printer I am returning to store this year...really put an effort of time into trying to get competent help from HP.  Brother here I come.

i'm having the same error - definitely a false paper jam error.  i just hit OK and then it prints.  this is very time-consuming.  do i really need to uninstall/reinstall software?

if 2 computers (one mac, one pc) are using this printer and both are getting the paper jam message, do i need to remove the software from both computers? since a lot of people seem to be getting this error, has HP identified the cause? i don't want to waste my time uninstalling/reinstalling if the problem will come back. i already tried unplugging for 30 seconds 3 times and am still getting the error... HELP!

I have a j6450 with paper jam message. the problem seems to be that the roller arm won''t come down to pick up the paper. I worked when i first hooked it up, but now it is stuck in the up position. it makes a grinding noise like it might want to work.

I had (and may still have) the same problem.  I had an HP printer prior to the J6480 -- I thought I had uninstalled the software for it, but had not done so.  I did an uninstall on the old HP software -- and it SEEMS to work now; at least on two test runs.  The problem was NOT my accidentally selecting the wrong printer when I went to print something -- the J6480 was clearly selected.

 

This solution doesn't make any sense to me, because you can have multiple printers on the same computer (which I have had in the past).   This jammed paper message is strange in that -- I can print.  It's just when I go to a new print job -- I get the jammed message -- until I pull the paper out of the tray (it is not stuck) and reinsert it.  We will see if it lasts.  (iMAC)   DWAZ

I experienced false paper jam errors with my HP J6450 all-in-one Officejet.  There was no jam at all.  When I hit OK on the front of the printer it cleared the problem.  Sometimes I had 3 or 4 print requests waiting in the queue for the jam to clear.  The printer would run the entire batch after I hit "ok" on the face of the Officejet printer.  However, the next time I hit print on my PC the jam error message would,again, pop up in the lower right of my PC screen.  Hitting "ok" on the printer cleared the problem.  What a pain!! 

 

Originally the printer worked fine.  I wonder if a power surge or normal power outage at my house might have caused the printer to malfunction. 

 

The instructions you gave to somebody else on this forum was my hint.  I cleared the problem by cycling the power on & off 3 times by removing the power cord from the back of the printer.  I unplugged the unit about 45 sec's each time.  When it powered up I waited for the printer to stop making noises, which might have been 45 sec's too.  In all, I estimate it took about 10 minutes to reset the printer.  It worked.  Unlike the other users, I didn't need to uninstall/reinstall software.  Thanks for posting the forum.

I installed a new cartridge, but after printing one page I got the message "cartridge error: replace right cartridge." I tried some of the other tricks on this forum, without success.

 

The old (empty) cartridge was still recognized. 

 

Then I saw that the top of the new cartridge had a dent in each side. I don't know why. But after I installed another new cartridge, the printer worked fine. 

 

I guess sometimes it's that simple: If the new cartridge doesn't work, try another new cartridge.

If it seems like only 1 particular cartridge is not working, then just call HP Tech Support, and they should be able to replace the cartridge for free. You may need to send the defective cartridge back to HP using their prepaid return kit that they'll send along with the replacment cartridge.
