I just installed a new Yellow ink cartridge 951XL and I'm getting a printer failure message: There is a problem with the printer or ink system. I shut down the printer and unplugged as mentioned and still get the same message. Is my ink cartridge bad even though it's new?

@ion5319, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

When experiencing a printer failure message after installing a new ink cartridge, specifically stating an issue with the printer or ink system, it can be frustrating. Here’s a guide to help you troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:

Verify Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure the ink cartridge you installed is compatible with your printer model. Check the documentation that came with your printer or visit HP's ink cartridge compatibility page.

Reinstall the Cartridge:

  • Sometimes, the cartridge might not be inserted correctly. Remove the cartridge and reinstall it firmly. Ensure it clicks into place properly.

Clean the Cartridge and Printer:

  • Use a lint-free cloth to clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts in the printer. Dirt or residue can sometimes cause connection issues.

Check for Damage:

  • Inspect the new cartridge for any visible damage. If you find cracks or missing parts, the cartridge might be faulty.

Perform a Reset:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in. Turn on the printer and check if the error persists.

Replace Another Cartridge:

  • If possible, try installing another cartridge to see if the printer recognizes it. This can help determine if the issue is with the cartridge or the printer itself.

Update Printer Firmware: (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes installing the latest firmware can resolve compatibility issues with new cartridges.

I did all the above and still I get the printer error message. I'm using an HP OfficeJet 8600 Pro.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Remove the cartridges.
  4. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back in.
  6. Wai for few minutes and then insert the cartridges (let printer prompt for cartridges)

I've done all the steps you've listed! Everytime I add a new ink cartridge it tells me the cartridge is damaged. This is getting to expensive. Time for a new printer as I can't seem to save this one - HP 8600
