HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 All-in-One Printer

I recently purchased new ink cartridges for my HP Officejet Pro 8730 printer. Once I entered the ink cartridges, the supply level on HP Smart said that they were completely full. After running the "clean printheads" a few times to get all the lines out of the prints (after not using it for a while) HP Smart and the printer itself is saying that the ink levels are already almost depleted. The original HP 952 print cartridge's say that they should last about 650 pages per colour, but they are already showing almost depleted just after about 10 prints. What can I do to fix this error? Any help would be much appreciated.

HI @MeharS,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your new ink cartridges for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 are showing as almost depleted after only a few prints, here are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

  • Ensure that the cartridges are properly installed. Sometimes, if they are not seated correctly, it can cause issues:
    1. Open the printer’s front access door.
    2. Remove the cartridges and reinsert them, ensuring they click into place.

2. Reset the Printer

  • A simple reset can sometimes resolve issues with ink level readings:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
    3. Wait for about 60 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

3. Run the Printer Maintenance

  • Use the printer's built-in maintenance features to clear any issues:
    1. Access the printer's menu and navigate to Tools or Setup.
    2. Look for options like Print Quality Maintenance, Clean Printhead, or Align Cartridges and run them.

4. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date, as updates can resolve bugs related to ink levels:
    1. Open the HP Smart app or go to the printer's control panel.
    2. Navigate to the settings or help section and check for updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel571,

After completing all theses steps, my new ink cartridges are still displaying as low. Any more actions I could take would be much appreciated.

Here is an image of the "Cartridge Level Gauge." I hope some information here may be useful.

Hi @MeharS,

Thank you for your response. Please follow the steps below:

Please try these steps:

Reset the printer

A printer reset can resolve some ink cartridge issues. Follow these steps to reset your printer.

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Wait at least 15 seconds.

Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.

If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.

Clean the ink cartridge contacts

Ink buildup or debris on the ink cartridge contacts might cause an ink cartridge error. Follow these steps to remove, inspect, and clean the problem ink cartridge (the ink cartridge or cartridges indicated in the error message).

   CAUTION:

Clean the ink cartridges one at a time. Do not leave an ink cartridge outside of the printer for more than 10 minutes. Also, never turn off the printer when an ink cartridge is removed from its slot. Leaving ink cartridge slots empty might cause damage to the cartridge ink system.

Gather the following materials:

Distilled water (tap water might contain contaminants that can damage the ink cartridge)

Cotton swabs, coffee filter, or other soft, lint-free material

Clean sheet of paper

Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the left side of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you proceed.

Remove the ink cartridge from its slot.

Place the ink cartridge on a sheet of paper with the copper strips facing up.

Clean the copper-colored contacts.

Lightly moisten the lint-free material with distilled water and squeeze out any excess water.

Gently wipe the ink cartridge copper contacts clean until there is no ink residue or debris on the cloth.

Carefully reinsert the ink cartridge into its slot, and then push the ink cartridge forward until it clicks into place.

   NOTE:

Make sure that the colored dot on the ink cartridge label matches the colored dot on the carriage slot.

Repeat these steps for the other ink cartridges, if necessary.

Close the cartridge access door.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
