I wanted to follow up on my other thread but that’s now locked so I’m creating a new thread here…

As mentioned earlier, I called HP support regarding the 74899 error and they were unable to offer any info on its cause. Their only suggestion was to get in touch with a service centre.

They gave me the number of two third-party companies here in the UK. I called them and they were both utterly mystified why HP recommended them. The first didn’t service printers, although they would be happy to sell me a replacement part if I knew what part I needed. The second would only be able to service the printer if they’d sold it to me.

Needless to say I wasn’t particularly happy with that response. I took a few days to think about how best to escalate this and, in the interim, the printer started working again. I wasn’t super happy about this — problems that mysteriously disappear are likely to mysteriously reappear — but I decided to let it slide.

A few months later the printer stopped working, but this time with more serious symptoms. It would not boot, with the front panel saying:

Printhead damaged.

I called HP support again and got a more definitive answer. This is definitely a hardware problem and I definitely need to arrange a repair. Better yet, they gave me the number of a service centre that actually worked.

These folks were prepared to come look at my printer, although they cautioned me that, if this does turn out to be a failed print head, the replacement part is no longer available and thus they won’t be able to complete the repair.

A quick search for this 0xc6fd0813 error suggests that my printer does need a new print head, so I don’t think I’ll be able to get it repaired. More fodder for the landfill I guess. *sigh*
