We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The "Printhead Missing or Failed" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer usually indicates a problem with the printhead or its connection. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Restart the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes to reset the internal components.
  4. Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.

Check the Printhead Installation

  1. Open the ink cartridge access door.
  2. Wait until the carriage stops moving.
  3. Remove all ink cartridges.
  4. Lift the printhead latch and carefully remove the printhead.
  5. Reinsert the printhead properly and secure the latch.
  6. Reinstall the ink cartridges and close the printer cover.
  7. Restart the printer and check if the error is resolved.

Clean the Printhead Contacts

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the ink access door and remove the printhead.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the copper-colored contacts on the printhead and inside the printer.
  4. Let it dry for 5 minutes, then reinsert the printhead and cartridges.
  5. Turn the printer back on and check for errors.

Update Printer Firmware

  1. Go to HP official website and download the latest firmware update for your printer.
  2. Install it and restart the printer.

Reset the Printer

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
  3. Confirm to reset the printer.
  4. Restart and check if the issue is resolved.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
