Hi @SHBooth1967,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're seeing the "Use Setup Cartridges" message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 after installing new HP 953XL cartridges, it typically means the printer is expecting the original "setup" cartridges that are included with new printers. These setup cartridges are specifically designed to initialize the printer.
Here are a few steps you can take:
Reset the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about 10 minutes.
- After 10 minutes, plug the printer back in and turn it on to see if it recognizes the new cartridges.
Check the Cartridge Installation:
- Make sure the cartridges are properly installed and seated correctly. Even if the new cartridges are genuine HP 953XL, they might not be recognized properly if they are not fully inserted.
Ensure No Ink Cartridge Protection Is Enabled:
- Sometimes, HP printers have a setting enabled that blocks the use of third-party or non-setup cartridges. While this is more common with third-party cartridges, it’s worth ensuring that the printer is not rejecting the new ones.
Try the Printer’s Maintenance Reset:
- You can try performing a full reset or re-initialize the printer's settings by navigating to the printer's menu on the display screen (if applicable) and looking for a "Restore Factory Defaults" option.
If the printer still insists on setup cartridges, you might also want to consider purchasing a set of genuine setup cartridges to bypass the issue, or if the printer was used, it may be stuck in a state requiring initial setup.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
