Hi all,

our OfficeJet 4634, working flawlessly over the time, suddenly showed an error on its display:

ERROR CODE
0x02BBC2ED
SM_MODULE C

After that, the printer does not turn on anymore. Basically tried every trick, unplug, unplug for 24h, different socket, long-press of every button etc. The printer is not turning on anymore. The (internal) powersupply is working fine (green led is on, power supply is providing 32v).
What is wrong with the printer? I know it is rather old, but looking through current offers, from HP and competitors regarding customer printers, I do not like any option at all to buy a new printer to be honest.
Thanks in advance

Chris

@Christoph14, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error 0x02BBC2ED SM_MODULE C on your HP OfficeJet 4634 indicates a fatal internal firmware or system board failure, most likely within the "SM_MODULE" (Service Module) — which handles core printer system functions. This is not a common user-fixable issue and usually points to either:

  • Corrupt firmware
  • Failure of internal memory or controller ICs
  • Main logic board (formatter board) malfunction

Since you've already:

  • Confirmed the power supply is working (green LED and proper voltage),
  • Tried resets (unplugging for long durations, button presses, etc.),
  • Used different sockets,

...then unfortunately the internal logic board has likely failed beyond recovery via resets or updates.

Your options now:

Hard Reset:

  • Disconnect the power cable while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables connected to the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • Ensure the printer is directly connected to a wall outlet, not a surge protector.
  • Reconnect the power cable and try to power on the printer.

 Try a firmware recovery:

  1. While the printer is off:
  2. Connect it via USB to a Windows PC (not over Wi-Fi).
  3. Open HP Firmware Update Utility (you'll need to find the last firmware for the 4634 model).
  4. Hold Cancel + Start Copy Black (or Back + Power, varies by model).
  5. Plug in power while holding the buttons, and wait for any sign of USB detection or firmware transfer.
  6. If it shows up, immediately flash the firmware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
