Hi @Gunsmaoke ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the Start Error 0x6100004A on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 usually indicates a hardware or internal printer mechanism issue, such as a paper jam, carriage jam, or obstruction.

Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable.
  • Open the ink cartridge access door and the paper path cover.
  • Inspect for and remove any visible paper jams, debris, or foreign objects inside the printer.
  • Ensure the paper feed rollers are clean and free from obstruction.
  • Close the printer doors and reassemble.

2. Reset the Printer

  • Disconnect the power cord while the printer is turned on.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors or power strips).
  • Turn on the printer and check if the error persists.

3. Check the Ink Cartridge and Carriage

  • Open the ink cartridge door, and verify the cartridges are installed correctly.
  • Remove the cartridges and check for any damage, dried ink, or obstructions in the ink carriage.
  • Reinsert the cartridges, ensuring they click securely into place.
  • Check if the carriage moves freely when the printer is off. If not, gently move it side to side to ensure it isn’t stuck.

4. Perform a Semi-Full Reset

This reset will clear error codes and restore the printer to factory default settings:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Hold down Cancel + Back or Power + Cancel for about 10-15 seconds.
  3. Release the buttons when the printer starts resetting.

5. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can sometimes cause errors:

  1. Download the latest firmware for the OfficeJet Pro 6978 from HP's website.
  2. Install the firmware update on your computer and connect it to the printer via USB or Wi-Fi.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I had already tried steps 1 & 2.

I am confident that the ink cartridges are installed correctly; however, they are locked in the far-right position.

For Step 4, "Hold down Cancel + Back or Power + Cancel for about 10-15 seconds." I'm not sure where the cancel button would be.  There isn't a cancel button that I'm aware of on this printer.  Maybe you could tell me where I can find it.

My HP Support Assistant says I'm up to date with software and drivers.  It was last checked on 12/17/24.

The printer was purchased in 2017, so maybe it is just reaching its own end of life.  I don't do much printing, as I use it mainly for scanning, which is working fine.

Thanks for your suggestions so far and looking forward to any comments about the semi-full reset.

Tried everything.  Attempted to get support online but would just say it is a hardware error and to buy another printer.

According to HP Support Assistant, the firmware is up to date.  The scanner still continues to work, so all is not lost.  I'm replacing it with the HP 8135e.  Apparently 2-sided scanning has been removed from the lower end printers.  I would have had to go to an OfficeJet 9 series, I believe.

Sending a private message to Gunsmoke is not helpful as I have the same exact experience.  My printer generated this error on December 18.  I would like to know the solution sent to Gunsmoke to see if that will work for me also.  If not, the printer is completely useless and I do use it for printing quite a bit especially duplex printing in order to save paper.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
