Hi @sheepmom

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how worrying it feels when the printer powers on but the cartridges don’t move into place. You’ve already done the right first steps by restarting, unplugging, and connecting directly to the wall socket, so thank you for trying those.

Let’s go deeper into the mechanics and settings to bring the printer back to normal.

Step 1: Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions

  • Open the ink cartridge access area and gently look for any paper fragments or packing material that may be blocking the carriage.
  • Even a small piece of paper or tape can prevent the carriage from moving.

Step 2: Perform a Power Reset

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the cord from the wall outlet and wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the cord back into the wall outlet first, then reconnect to the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on and listen carefully—see if the carriage attempts to move.

Step 3: Manually Move the Carriage

  • With the printer unplugged, gently try sliding the carriage to the center.
  • If it resists, do not force it—this indicates a blockage or mechanical jam.

Step 4: Update Firmware

  • On your Windows 10 computer, open the HP App.
  • Select your printer, then go to Advanced Settings > Printer Update.
  • Install any available firmware updates, as these can correct internal errors.
  • You can also check updates here: HP OfficeJet Pro 8035 Printer Firmware Update

Step 5: Run Diagnose & Fix

  • In the HP App, select your printer.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Allow the tool to scan—it can automatically repair certain hardware and connectivity issues.
  • Download the HP App here if not already installed: HP App for Windows

Step 6: Check Scanner and Other Functions

  • Since scanning works, the printer’s mainboard is active. This narrows the issue to the carriage system.
  • If the carriage still doesn’t move after the above steps, it suggests a mechanical obstruction or carriage drive issue.

You’ve already shown patience by trying the initial resets, and that effort makes troubleshooting smoother. Please try these steps carefully and let me know if the carriage attempts to move after the power reset and firmware update.
