HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.15 Catalina

Actually, I'm not running macOS 10.15 Catalina, but this is the latest Mac OS in the page's drop-down. I'm running macOS 14.2.1 Sonoma with a WiFi connection to the printer.

Since yesterday, the printer has been behaving strangely. It said my yellow ink cartridge was empty, even though the two other color cartridges were installed at the same time and they appear to be roughly half full. The old y cartridge also didn't feel light enough to be empty. The printer also said the black cartridge was empty, although it seemed half full. Nonetheless, I installed a new one. It still wouldn't print.

Today I purchased a set of new HP 952XL cartridges from my local Staples. When I replaced the old yellow cartridge with the new one, the printer said it was a previously used HP cartridge. Then we managed to print a single page of B&W text. After that, when I try to print a B&W document, the printer freezes and shows a BSOD with the error number B89BF40E.

I can't find this error anywhere on this site or the rest or the Internet. What should I do?
