I have similar problems with the tray 2 screen warning stoping me from printing, scanning etc. When I opened up the tray, it turned out the protruded extender at the end of the tray on the left had broken off. After taking the trays out, I see that there is a small trigger that the protuded extension went into to operate the printer.

 

I called HP support to see if I could just get another tray but because the machine is a year old, I am out of warranty (ridiculous). I work for the state and they have a huge contract with HP. You would think the HP customer service would be much better. 🤔 One of the suggestions was to buy a new printer at $500. I said why would I buy something with a design flaw from a company with poor customer service?

 

So, I tried ordering the tray separately and it is out-of-stock at Amazon and HP indefinitely. 

 

My question is a simple one, can I circumvent tray 2 so the printer and scanner are operational?
