Put in a new black cartridge and got "Printer Failure" message.  I have done ALL of the troubleshooting suggestions, multiple times, with no change. I checked for updates; reinstalled the driver for the printer.  Interestingly, I put in the empty cartridge as a test, and the machine at least went back to the regular task screen/buttons, but it would not let me print with one of the full color cartridges.  I've run the HP Scan Doctor several times, as well - it will get to the final screen, showing all is well and to print a test page, but then it gives the failure message again.  Wondering: Is this a planned obsolescence ploy, embedded in a recent automatic update?  I have had it for many years now and have gotten good service from it, with problems easily fixed when they happened.

Hi @SG1mil,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can understand how frustrating it is to see a “Printer Failure” message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 after installing a new black cartridge, especially when you’ve already tried all the recommended troubleshooting steps.

Recommended Steps

1. Perform a Semi-Full Reset

This clears deeper firmware errors:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect and power on while holding # and 3 on the control panel.
  • Release when the screen shows Resetting.

2. Remove and Reseat All Cartridges

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove all cartridges and inspect for ink buildup.
  • Clean the electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert cartridges firmly.

3. Check Printhead Health

  • From the printer menu, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Printhead Cleaning.
  • If the option is unavailable or fails, the printhead may need replacement.

4. Update Firmware
