Lenovo Thinkpad / HP Photosmart 5200 series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I install my Photosmart 5200 series printer via USB find I still need to plug it in in order to print anything. If I DON'T plug it in all I have is the option of installing on the network either wired or WiFi. WiFi signal is poor where I WANT IT set up. So, it cant find it to install properly. Don't WANT or NEED to have to have a network to print to.  Just want to WiFi Direct (and it IS turned ON).  When I try disconnecting from the Network and connecting either directly to the printer or to the "direct - hp whatever" the SOB is Offline. Done everything multiple people have recommended multiple times. Downloaded and ran the diagnostic app designed for "offline" errors. NADA. Downloaded and ran the driver app for IT professionals. NADA. IF Windows actually prints a test page, when I try Office  the current print job remains listed via the printer icon with an error. Windows 10 gives me only the Printers and Scanners box. The only way I found "Devices and Printers" was Right Clicking the Printer Icon on the taskbar BY ACCIDENT(when it is NOT PRINTING,  of course). THEN the "real" pic of my printer ain't greyed out but has a green check mark (or I can get it that way). NADA.  Ready to chuck the thing back to Costco and looking at Docks on you-know where. Keeping my WiFi defective printer plugged into it all the time sounds a lot easier than this **bleep**. Apologies for the rant.

Connect the printer to the Wi-Fi network

  1. From the home screen of your printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon .

  2. Touch the Setup icon .

  3. Touch Restore Network Defaults or Restore Network Settings, and then touch Yes to confirm your selection.

  4. After the default network settings are restored, touch the back arrow, touch Wireless Settings, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard.

The printer searches for available networks.

  5. Touch the name of your wireless network.

  6. If your wireless network does not display in the list of wireless networks, touch Enter New Network Name, and then type the name of your wireless network.

    NOTE:

Type the exact network name, including any uppercase and lowercase letters.

  7. Type the WEP or WPA key (network password), and then touch Done.

If you do not know your network password, go to Find Your Wireless WEP, WPA, WPA2 Password..

Once the printer connects to the wireless network, the blue Wireless light on the control panel turns on solid.

To connect and print via Wi-fi direct try the steps in the document- Printing with Wi-Fi Direct
