I am trying to print greeting cards on Strathmore greeting card stock. They are 5"x7" and when opened are therefore 7" x10". I want to print both the outside of the card and the inside and am willing to print one side then re-insert the paper and print the inside. My printer is less than 3 frustrating weeks old. It constantly gives me very frequent but irregularly occuring paper size mismatch error messages, even though I set it up after each print run of 10 pages on both the printer properties page and the MS office print page. When it does that, I cancel the document in the print queue (which often doesn't work because the printer won't respond), then I recheck and redo the printer properties etc. Note that the print page sometimes gives me the option of selecting Custom page 10"x7" and sometimes it only gives me the option to select B5 (JIS). Sometimes it will print and not give a paper mismatch when both the print page and the printer properties pages are set to B5, but most of the time it will not.
Sometimes it will give repeated never ending paper mismatch error messages no matter what I do, then will not shut off when I press the on-off switch, and the error message even persists after I unplug the printer and wait a while. Sometimes it just prints random parts of the card. I have about 8% waste from trying to use this printer. That costs.
Today for example, in two hours of patiently trying everything with this new printer, I was able to print 10 cards inside and out and 1 card outside only before the papermismatch errors started. The inability to find a printer that will print on 5X7 greeting card stock and the unreliability of the HP printers I have purchased is harming my company {Content Removed}
Please advise. It is under warranty. Should I just return it? That will mean that in this past month when I have been producing cards I will have returned two HP printers (both were 8710 injets and completely incapable of printing cards even though it says it will in the literature), and this 7740. That would make 3 junked printers going back to HP!!!
May I ask you as a company, How is your stock price faring and are you reporting the high user dissatisfaction and the high number of returned printers to your stock holders. I think not. Quality matters.

Hello, @MMartist - Hope you are well 🙂
Thanks for your continued participation on the HP Forums! I’d like to help!
I see that you are having trouble printing 5*7 greeting card on your Officejet 7740 printer. Let’s try and update the drivers and change the printing preferences. Here are the steps:
- Unplug the USB cable from the printer and computer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Restart your computer.
- Now click on http://hp.care/2pyZRpK to download and install the printer drivers.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
Now, go to – Control panel - Devices and printer – Right-click on Officejet 7740 and select printing preference.
Change the paper type and paper size and apply the settings. Now try and printing.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Good luck 🙂

Well, thank you for trying, but the situation remains the same. I did what you said (uninstall, reinstall etc), and carefully set the printer dashboard for B5(JIS), set the print properties for same, set the print page for same, and printed 20 cards inside and out with no problem. The next batch, same settings, same paper, caused 3 page size mismatches before it would print (each time I have to open the print queue, cancel the document, close the print driver setting, close the document I am printing entirely, re-open the document, carefully make sure all the printer properties are the same and try to print again. It agreed to print another 10 pages. But now in the middle of the fourth document, nothing works, all the same settings that I have beenusing, and same paper, but the printer just gives repeated paper size mismatch error messages.
So, here is the score: in 2 hrs of doing nothing but trying to get this machine to print, it printed a total of only 30 cards printed (both sides), and 10 cards printed one side only . In total, 2 hrs of concentrated effort and the equivalent of only 70 pages printed. And 6 paper size mismatch error messages.
Comments?
Cheers!

Hello?? I need to talk to whoever at HP did the paper size programming for the HP 7740. And soon. I have not been able to print any greeting cards all day. I have tried every combination of things that sometimes work to print greeting cards, have had my printer unplugged for a few hours, and nothing has worked. Even when everything everywhere is set for B5JIS it will not print and gives paper mismatch error messages.
So, the question is, for paper that is 7" wide and 10" long, how do I set the preferences and the internal programming on the dashboard to print on that (thick) paper.
One more day and this printer will be returned; HP will lose money on this sale and I will be shopping for a new brand of printer after having lost many days of being unable to print.
Please see my previous posts. I need someone who knows how this printer is programmed to answer.
Thank you,
Michelle Marcotte

Hello Rainbow 23, I followed your rather general instructions, but they did lead me to the HP video on programing custom paper sizes. As a result, the printer finally printed on the greeting card stock -- this time. It remains to be seen whether this will continue to work as I have had solutions given before that only worked for a short while. In the meantime, however, I do thank you for getting back to me with some instructions that worked.
Cheers!
