macOS 26.0 Tahoe

My HP6958 Printer displays "Paper jam" error message, but upon further inspection there is no paper jam. But when opening the lid, the printer head and ink cartridges could not move to the center, but stayed at the right side. I continue to simply turn and off the printer and it eventually works. That process is not not workable due to the time plus it hasn't workled the last few times. A previous workflow from 2022 advised to unplug it from the wall and unit and wait over 1 minute. I did that. Thrre times. Nothing. How can I fix it? Or is it time to get a new printer? Thank you.

Hi @brad4wv,

I understand your printer is displaying a “Paper Jam” error even when there is no paper stuck, and the printhead is staying on the right side instead of moving to the center. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

a. Check Power Source
    • Ensure the printer is connected directly to a working wall outlet and not a surge protector or extension.
    • If possible, try another wall outlet to rule out power fluctuations.

b. Remove All Paper and Inspect Paths
    • Remove paper from the input and output trays.
    • Open the rear access door or duplexer (if available) and check for any small torn paper bits or foreign objects.
    • Gently clean the paper path rollers with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with clean water.

c. Reset the Printer Mechanism
    • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cable from the rear of the printer.
    • Unplug it from the wall outlet as well.
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    • Plug the power cable back directly into the wall outlet and then into the printer.
    • Power the printer back on and wait for it to initialize fully.

d. Check Printhead Carriage Movement
    • When you power it on, observe if the ink carriage attempts to move.
    • If it stays stuck on the right side, gently check for obstructions on the carriage path (with the printer powered off).
    • Do not force the carriage; just ensure no loose paper or obstacles are blocking it.

e. Clean the Carriage Path & Encoder Strip
    • Power off and unplug the printer.
    • Open the front access door and locate the thin transparent strip behind the carriage (encoder strip).
    • Using a dry lint-free cloth, gently wipe the strip from left to right to remove dust or ink smudges.
    • Make sure the carriage area is clean and free of debris.

I hope this helps.
