Hi @Lorette65,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 9023 All-in-One Printer is showing a paper jam error, even though there is no visible paper stuck in the printer, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Check All Possible Jam Locations
- Input Tray: Remove any paper from the input tray and check for any small pieces of paper that might be stuck.
- Output Tray: Look into the output tray area for any jammed paper.
- Ink Cartridge Access Area: Open the ink cartridge access door and check for any paper that might be jammed around the carriage.
- Duplexer (if present): If your printer has a duplexer (for double-sided printing), remove it and check inside for any paper.
2. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This reset might clear any false jam error messages.
3. Clean the Paper Path
- Use a flashlight: Look carefully inside the printer using a flashlight to spot any tiny bits of paper or debris that might be triggering the sensor.
- Rollers: Check the rollers for any debris or bits of paper and clean them gently using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
4. Check the Printer’s Sensor
- Sometimes, the paper jam sensor can get stuck or dirty, leading to false errors. Gently clean the sensor area, which is usually near the paper feed path, with a soft brush or compressed air.
5. Update the Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can do this through the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP website and downloading the latest firmware for your printer model.
6. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults
- Resetting the printer to factory settings can sometimes clear persistent errors. You can do this through the printer’s settings menu. However, this will erase all your custom settings, so make sure to reconfigure the printer afterward.
7. Check for MacOS Sonoma Compatibility
- Ensure that your printer is fully compatible with MacOS Sonoma 14.6.1. Sometimes, software updates can lead to unexpected issues. Check the HP support website for any updates or drivers specific to your operating system.
8. Perform a Hard Reset
- If none of the above steps work, perform a hard reset of the printer. Unplug the power cord while the printer is on. Wait for 60 seconds, and then plug it back in while holding down the power button for 15 seconds. This can help clear any stuck error messages.

I hope this helps.
