Hi @Derrick3b ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 5542 is showing an "Out of Paper" error despite having paper loaded in the tray, it could be caused by several issues, such as the paper tray not being aligned, dirty rollers, or incorrect settings. Here's how you can resolve the issue:

1. Check the Paper

  • Ensure the paper is not curled, folded, or damp.
  • Align the stack neatly and ensure all paper is the same size and type.
  • Do not exceed the paper capacity limit of the tray.

2. Adjust the Paper Tray

  • Remove the paper and reinsert it properly into the tray.
  • Ensure the paper guides are snug against the edges of the paper stack but not too tight.

3. Clean the Paper Rollers

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the paper tray and locate the rollers.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the rollers.
  • Allow the rollers to dry completely before turning the printer back on.

4. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. Sometimes, a simple reset can clear errors.

5. Update Printer Firmware

6. Check Printer Settings

  • Verify that the correct paper size and type are selected in the printer settings on your computer or the printer control panel.

7. Inspect for Hardware Issues

  • Check if there are any obstructions in the paper path.
  • Inspect the paper tray for damage or misalignment.

8. Run a Printer Diagnostic

  • Use the HP Smart app or your printer’s control panel to run a diagnostic test. This can help identify hardware or software issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
