I have a persistent ER 5 Message on my Laserjet MFP M234dw  printer . Nothing I seem to do will clear the issue, including factory reset

The Er/05 error message on your HP LaserJet MFP M234dw indicates a paper jam. Here are step-by-step instructions to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Check for Jammed Paper:

  • Open the paper output tray and gently remove any visible paper or paper pieces stuck inside.
  • Make sure to check for any paper obstructions in all accessible areas of the printer.

Remove and Reinstall the Toner Cartridge:

  • Open the printer's cartridge access door.
  • Carefully remove the toner cartridge.
  • Look for and remove any jammed paper in the toner area.
  • Reinstall the toner cartridge securely.

Check and Clear Paper Input Tray:

  • Remove the paper stack from the input tray.
  • Inspect for any bent, wrinkled, or torn paper and remove it.
  • Ensure no obstructions are inside the tray.
  • Reload a fresh stack of paper.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer on.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have performed all the actions recommended but the error message still persists. I was on the advice chat line and eventually it was suggested that the printer needs servicing. As it is out of warranty I fear that the cost of that may exceed me going out and buying a new printer which defeats the object! Many thanks

I understand your HP LaserJet MFP M234dw is still showing the persistent Er/05 message despite trying all the recommended troubleshooting steps. Let’s go over a few additional checks that can sometimes resolve this before considering service.

Inspect the Paper Path Thoroughly
– Remove all trays and covers and carefully look inside the printer.
– Even small bits of paper or dust can trigger the Er/05 error. Use a flashlight if needed.

Check the Toner Cartridge Door Sensors
– Sometimes the door or cartridge isn’t fully seated, causing a false jam error.
– Remove the cartridge and close the door without it, then reinsert the cartridge firmly.

Clean Roller Sensors
– Dust or debris on the paper feed rollers or sensors can cause jam errors.
– Use a dry, lint-free cloth to gently clean the rollers and visible sensor areas.

Try a Power Cycle with Extended Reset
– Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
– Leave it unplugged for 10–15 minutes, then plug it back in and power on.
– This can sometimes reset the sensor logic more fully than a standard reset.

Test with Minimal Paper
– Load only 1–2 sheets of fresh, straight paper in the input tray.
– Attempt a test print to see if the error persists, which can indicate if the issue is paper path related.
