Hi @JPNH03103,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
1. Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn Off the printer by disconnecting the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the printer and then to the wall outlet.
- Turn On the printer and check if it initializes correctly.
2. Update the Firmware:
If your printer's firmware is out of date, it may cause startup issues. Try to update the firmware:
- Connect the Printer to a computer via USB or Wi-Fi.
- Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware update for the HP Envy Photo 7858.
- Follow the instructions to install the firmware update.
3. Check for Obstructions:
- Ensure there are no paper jams or other obstructions inside the printer.
- Open the printer access door to check for any stuck paper or foreign objects.
- Remove any obstructions and close the access door.
4. Reset Network Configuration:
Sometimes, network configuration issues can cause the printer to hang during startup.
- Turn Off the printer.
- Hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons simultaneously on the printer and then turn it on.
- Release the buttons after the printer starts resetting the network settings.
5. Power Cycle with Persistence:
- Disconnect the power cord from the printer.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
6. Access the Recovery Mode (if available):
- Some HP printers have a recovery mode to troubleshoot startup issues.
- Refer to the user manual or HP Support for instructions specific to your model.
I hope this helps.

Hi @JPNH03103,
Thank you for the response.
Since the issue persists, let's try a few advanced steps:
1. Try Using the Front USB Port (If It Supports USB Flash Drives)
That port is typically for photo printing from USB drives, not for connecting to a PC, but here’s what you can try:
Take a USB flash drive, format it as FAT32, and download the firmware update. full file from HP’s website (if available).
Insert the USB flash drive into the front USB port while the printer is powered off.
Power the printer on and see if it enters recovery or firmware update mode.
Note: This only works if the printer's bootloader is designed to check the USB drive during startup, which varies by model.
2. Try USB Recovery via Rear USB-B Port (to a PC)
Connect your printer directly to a computer using a USB-B to USB-A cable (square end to printer, flat end to PC).
This cable plugs into the rear USB port, not the SD/USB at the front.
Download the HP Printer Update Utility for the Envy 7858:
HP Envy 7858 Firmware
Run the updater on your PC and see if the printer is detected in recovery mode.
If detected, proceed with the firmware flash.
If it's not detected, go to Device Manager on your PPC and check under “Ports” or “Unknown Devices” and install HP Universal Print Drivers.
I hope this helps.

@JPNH03103, thank you for sticking with us through this!
You're absolutely right to want to use the CAT5 (Ethernet) connection, and yes — if your printer is successfully connected to your router via Ethernet and the network sees the device — it may be possible to update the firmware that way if the printer gets far enough in its boot process to be detected.
Let’s try a few checks to get you closer:
Try These Steps:
Check Router’s Connected Devices List:
Log into your router’s admin page and see if the printer shows up in the connected devices list.
If it’s visible, make note of the IP address. This means it’s trying to talk to the network.
Ping the Printer from Your PC:
On your PC, open Command Prompt and type: ping [IP address]
Replace [IP address] with the one from your router.
Do you get replies, or does it time out?
Run the HP Firmware Update Utility:
Even if the screen is stuck, try running the firmware updater from HP’s website.
Does your PC detect the printer over the network or show a “device in recovery mode”?
A Few Quick Questions:
Have you ever updated firmware before on this printer?
Does the black-filled circle ever blink or change?
Do you recall any power interruption or failed update before this started?
If it’s not detected on Ethernet or USB, the firmware recovery may only be possible via USB-B cable (rear port).
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

The problem is: The screen is stuck with white background, HP logo and only the 1st black circle, the others are white. I have connected the pc to the printer via the usb wire harness. Nothing changes. I unplug printer from the wall, i unplug power cord from printer, i wait over 1 minute and then plug power cord back into the printer then into the wall. Then back to the white screen with 1 black circle. Nothing works. Because printer does not initialize, it is not seen by my wireless router. My pc cannot detect the printer even with usb wire harness connected. I cannot see on pc the printer at all. I have tried every instruction given to me by HP support here. The printer does not allow me to turn it off by holding the on and off front button. And i can not do a screen reset for the screen will not change to allow me to do so.
