I'm trying to print 6x4 photos on an HP C4580, I often get a paper jam or only half the photo printed.  This occurs when using photo paper when using 6x4 standard printer paper it works fine.  I suspect the printer is not feeding the printer paper through properly.  When I print there is only one sheet in the feeder tray so there is no issue with the weight of a pile of paper causing the problem.  Is there a maximum weight of photo paper, e.g. 200gsm, that this printer can use.  I am printing from an iMac running macOS Ventura 13.6.7.

Hi @BrianP67,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering issues specifically when printing photos on your HP C4580 printer, especially with photo paper causing jams or incomplete prints. Here are some suggestions and considerations that might help resolve the problem:

1. Check Paper Specifications

Paper Weight: The HP C4580 printer can typically handle photo paper up to a certain weight. For best results, use photo paper that is within the recommended weight range specified by HP. Generally, printers like the C4580 can handle photo paper up to 280 gsm (grams per square meter). Exceeding this weight may lead to feeding issues or jams.

Paper Type: Ensure that you're using photo paper specifically designed for inkjet printers. Using paper not intended for inkjet printing can affect print quality and cause feeding problems.

2. Paper Loading

Paper Alignment: Make sure the photo paper is loaded correctly in the paper tray. Adjust the paper guides to fit snugly against the paper stack to prevent misalignment or skewed feeding.

Paper Condition: Check the condition of the photo paper. Ensure it is not curled, wrinkled, or bent, as these imperfections can interfere with the printer's feeding mechanism.

3. Printer Settings

Paper Type Selection: When printing photos, select the appropriate paper type in the printer settings on your iMac. This setting ensures that the printer adjusts its feeding mechanism and print head accordingly for optimal results.

Print Quality Settings: Adjust the print quality settings to match the type of photo paper being used. Higher quality settings may require slower printing speeds, which can help prevent jams.

4. Printer Maintenance

Clean Paper Feed Rollers: Over time, paper dust and debris can accumulate on the feed rollers, affecting paper feeding. Clean the feed rollers according to the printer's manual or instructions provided by HP.

Printer Firmware Update: Ensure that your HP C4580 printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes firmware updates include fixes for paper handling issues.

5. Test with Different Paper

  1. Trial with Different Paper: If possible, try printing photos on different types or brands of photo paper to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is specific to the paper currently being used.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
