Have a LaserJet M140w that is connected to the internet with the attention light flashing slowly.  Ran the diagnostics and get a code of the Print Que error.  I cleared the printer spool and que files.  I deinstalled and reinstalled.  I updated software/firmware.  Not sure what else to do.  Thank you.

Hi @AnitaQ

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for laying out everything you've tried—your methodical approach is spot-on, and I can imagine how frustrating it must be to see that attention light persist despite all your efforts.

The slow flashing attention light on the HP LaserJet M140w typically signals a pending job or communication fault, even when the diagnostics point to a cleared queue.

Let’s walk through a deeper recovery path to help you fully reset the print pipeline and restore functionality:

Step-by-Step: Resolve Print Queue Error on HP LaserJet M140w

1. Perform a Full Power Cycle with Network Reset

This clears residual memory and resets the network stack:

  • Turn off the printer
  • Unplug the power cord and leave it disconnected for 60 seconds
  • Disconnect the printer from Wi-Fi (via HP Smart or router settings)
  • Reconnect power and turn the printer back on
  • Reconnect to Wi-Fi using HP Smart or WPS button on your router

2. Clear Spooler and Temp Files Thoroughly

Even after clearing the queue, residual spooler files may linger:

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter
  • Locate Print Spooler, right-click → Stop
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files
  • Return to Services and Start the Print Spooler again

3. Reinstall Using HP Smart in Clean Mode

Instead of standard reinstall:

  • Uninstall the printer from Devices and Printers
  • Uninstall HP Smart and any HP-related drivers
  • Restart your PC
  • Reinstall HP Smart from the Microsoft Store
  • Add the printer using Wi-Fi setup, not USB

4. Check for Pending Firmware Updates

Even if you’ve updated recently, HP may release silent patches:

5. Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool (Windows)

  • In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Let it run a scan—it will automatically fix common connection issues.
You can also access this tool on HP’s support page if needed.

I know how exhausting this can be, especially when everything seems to check out but the printer still refuses to cooperate.

I’m here to help you get this resolved.
