When printing wide images on 8.5 x 11 paper, the print head starts banging and then "jams". No paper jam anywhere. The portion of the image that did print repeatedly moves farther to the right at each pass. Here's what I've tried after removing the jam:

1. Reset printer by unplugging from printer and wall outlet. Waited 3 minutes. Plugged back in and tried again.

2. Cleaned print head. Proceeded to the deep cleaning next.

3. Ran Print Quality Diagnostic report. Perfect result.

4. Ran Print head alignment. Runs about 1/4 of the way on the paper and jams. The part that did print does not look right. Each line starts a bit farther to the right on each line.

5. Removed output tray and examined paper input tray.  Completely clear of paper.

6. Opened the cover and removed the inside cover by it's handle to inspect rollers and sides. Completely clear of paper.

7. Turned printer on it's right side to inspect the bottom. There's a screwed in cover so nothing shows there.

8. Checked firmware. Up-to-date result.

9. Ran Printer Status Report. Printed fully and nothing appears off.

10. Manually slid the print head back and forth to check for friction points. Feels smooth to me.

11. Print cartridges are provided via HP Instant Ink program.

The only thing I haven't tried is restore to factory settings.

I'm at a loss of what to do next.  Can someone offer assistance?

Hi @csp3925,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your printer that is making sound while printing.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, I'm here to help you today.

Please follow the steps below to fix the issue.

A) Perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

C) If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
